Description
Part of a series of shots of a 6-foot Alligator in the wild. Everglades Florida… This Alligator was in a canal just next to a parking area at a Boardwalk into a wooded swamp. Several people were standing back taking pictures, but one individual with a camera sporting a short lens kept getting closer and closer to the Alligator. Eventually getting to within 5-foot of the Alligator. I stood 20-30 feet away using a large telephoto lens.
I finally started politely warning the other guy that he was getting close and the Alligator was warning him. Eventually the guy started backing away, but by that time the Alligator had got into the water and followed the guy all the way to his car. I stayed 20-30 feet away.
Taking pictures of wildlife is fun and exciting, but it is their environment and photographers should respect the animals space. The Alligator raising its head and opening its mouth is a sign of aggression and a sign that the Alligator felt threatened. Once the Alligator started moving it was funny to watch the guy hustle back to his vehicle. Score 1 for the Gator.
